Joe Montana signed MiniHelmet

Joe Montana was this close to going to North Carolina State University on a basketball scholarship before Notre Dame came through with a football grant. A good thing too. At Notre Dame, he quickly attained mythic status and the nickname "The Comeback Kid" due to his come from behind heroics. The NFL scouts were not impressed, and the San Francisco 49ers waited until the third round to draft the man who would become the NFL's greatest quarterback. Drafted in 1979, Joe led the 49ers from the cellar to the Championship in 1981-82. From then on "Golden Joe" led the 49ers to nine winning seasons in ten years, and a total of three Super Bowl Championships.
Montana's grace under fire and blond good looks made him the quarterback of the eighties on the team of the eighties. Possibly the most accurate passer in history, Joe could also sustain a drive with his uncanny scrambles. In the early nineties, injuries set Montana back, and to make room for the younger Steve Young, Joe was traded to the Kansas City Chiefs. Joe took a bad Chief team to the brink of a championship, but couldn't quite win a title there. Nagging injuries finally forced Montana to retire before the 1995 season, but not before he'd racked up enough yards to retire as the NFL's all-time leading passer. Considered by many experts to be the NFL's greatest quarterback ever. Montana remains so popular with his fans that they pay $ 150 for his autograph at card shows.
