Few players are truly unique, changing the way their sport is played with their singular skills. Ervin "Magic" Johnson is one of those few. A revolutionary player, Johnson, at 6'9" was the tallest point guard in league history. His incredible talent amazed even casual basketball fans. Everyone who saw Magic play took with them an indelible memory of what they had witnessed. People wondered "How could a man so big so many things with the ball and with his body?" It was magic.
Johnson accomplished virtually everything a player could dream of during his 13 year career, all of which was spent with the Los Angeles Lakers. He was a member of five Championship teams, won the MVP Award and the Finals MVP Award three times each. He was a 12-time All Star, and a nine-time member of the All-NBA First Team. He also won a Gold Medal with the original Dream Team at the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona.
Magic attended Michigan State University, where he led the Spartans to the 1979 National Championship, beating Larry Bird's team. Johnson then entered the 1979 NBA draft, where he was selected in the first round by the Lakers. Magic led the Lakers to the World Championship title in his first season, and his excellence continued throughout the eighties and early nineties. Known for his unbelievable passing, all around game, superb leadership, and incredible smile, Magic is generally regarded as the finest point guard in NBA history.
