In an historic 1998 campaign, Mark McGwire hit an unbelievable 70 home runs to eclipse Roger Maris' 37 year old record of 61. Mark hit 23 homers in his last 40 games to out-distance Chicago Cub slugger Sammy Sosa. Sosa also beat Maris' record by hitting 66 home runs. Mark had been hitting home runs at an incredible pace for the last several years, but few could have imagined how he would shatter the previous record.
Before his Major League career, Mark played college ball at USC. He was drafted by the Oakland Athletics in the first round in 1984. By 1987, Mark was pounding the ball out of the park regularly. He hit 49 home runs in his first full season with the As, and averaged 36 per year for his first six seasons. Injuries held him back in 1993 and 1994, but Mark bounced back in 1995, and hit 50 and 58 homers respectively, in 1996 and 1997. It wasn't any big surprise when he started hitting home runs with amazing regularity for the St. Louis Cardinals (where Mark was traded in 1997). But the way in which Mark crushed the record in the summer of 1998, and the classy way in which he conducted himself under great pressure, really impressed fans and experts alike. He and Sosa brought a lot of fans back to baseball that summer.
Mark will probably join the 500 (homer) Club this year, and who knows how many he'll end up with. Mark is known for his sweet swing as well as his unmatched power. Maybe Mark will become the best ever. His signature is hard to get, he doesn't sign much. But his many fans are willing to pay a little more for Mark McGwire.
